Consumer, civil or other route depends on the facts and jurisdiction.
Check the jurisdiction first
English-language coverage outside Quebec. Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta are the first-wave provinces; these are not described as the three largest provinces in all of Canada.
- Ontario
- British Columbia
- Alberta
Provincial dealer rules and regulator powers differ. Check the seller’s registration and the location of the transaction.
Identify the seller, issue and outcome
Separate your request for a repair or payment from a report of dealer misconduct. Keep the original sale disclosures and vehicle-history records. A manufacturer warranty dispute, private sale and registered-dealer complaint may require different routes.
If the vehicle may be unsafe, ask a qualified technician before driving it. Do not delay seeking help while trying to complete every checklist item. A complaint does not necessarily stop a legal deadline.
Gather the records you have
These are organising prompts, not a complete filing requirement. Check the receiving service’s instructions. You do not upload documents here; ticked items reset when this page is reloaded or you change market.

Who can help—and what to check
Use the official agency or service’s own website to confirm scope, fees and current filing instructions. An investigation, voluntary resolution and enforceable decision are different outcomes.
OMVIC dealer complaints
OMVIC handles concerns within its authority involving Ontario-registered dealers and salespeople, and may help seek a voluntary resolution.
Have ready
Have the bill of sale, dealer details, disclosure documents and a clear record of your attempt to resolve the issue with the dealer.
Important limit
OMVIC does not handle private sales and cannot order a refund, contract cancellation or repairs. Manufacturer-warranty and repair-shop issues fall outside this dealer-complaint route.
Vehicle Sales Authority
After trying to resolve a dispute with a dealer or broker-agent, check the VSA’s formal-complaint eligibility and document requirements.
Have ready
Keep the signed agreement, dealer or broker-agent details, disclosures, advertisement and your correspondence.
Important limit
As checked on 3 September 2026, VSA directs deposit and dealer-fee issues to My Self-Help and is not accepting formal complaints about those issues. Verify its current instructions before filing.
AMVIC consumer services
AMVIC reviews concerns about automotive businesses and salespeople in Alberta for possible breaches of the legislation it enforces.
Have ready
Provide the business details, contract, advertised representations, supplied inspection documents and evidence of the concern.
Important limit
AMVIC cannot change or cancel contracts or require repairs, replacement vehicles or money payments. Seeking damages may require a separate civil route.
Prepare a one-page factual summary
- Transaction: who sold the vehicle, where, when and for how much.
- Problem: what was represented, what happened and when the problem appeared.
- Evidence: number your contract, messages, reports and receipts so each fact can be checked.
- Attempts to resolve: dates, who you contacted, what you asked for and the replies.
- Requested outcome: explain the repair or other remedy you seek without claiming an entitlement you have not checked.
Keep personal identification, bank details and unredacted records out of public posts. This summary is not a legal notice, tribunal form or substitute for advice about deadlines and remedies.
